ADVANCED DIPLOMA | SQA

“Style is the signal of a civilisation. It is impossible for a man to produce objects without reflecting the society of which he is a part.” Misha Black

The Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design and Manufacture is a comprehensive, industry-oriented programme that prepares students for professional careers across the fashion and apparel sector.

The programme combines creative design development with technical garment production, equipping students with the full spectrum of skills required in today’s fashion industry—from concept and visualisation to construction and final production. It reflects the industry demand for professionals who can integrate design thinking with practical manufacturing expertise.

As outlined in the programme specification, the qualification is designed to develop knowledge, technical skills, and creative abilities for success in the fashion business (Introduction, page 1). Students engage with the complete fashion design process, including research, concept development, pattern cutting, garment construction, and collection design.

The curriculum balances creativity with technical precision. Students learn how to interpret briefs, develop original design concepts, and produce garments to a professional standard. At the same time, they gain hands-on experience in pattern drafting, sewing techniques, textile understanding, and CAD for fashion design, reflecting key units listed in the programme structure (see tables on pages 3–6).

A strong emphasis is placed on project-based learning, where students work on integrated assignments that simulate real industry practice. The graded units—highlighted in the document (page 17)—require students to plan, develop, and evaluate complete garments, reinforcing both creative and technical competencies.

The programme also develops essential professional skills, including research, communication, collaboration, and project management. These transferable skills are embedded throughout the curriculum to meet employer expectations and support progression to higher education or employment.

By the end of the programme, students will have built a professional fashion portfolio showcasing their design and production capabilities, preparing them for roles within the fashion industry or for further study.

Graduates may pursue careers such as:

  • Fashion Designer
  • Pattern Cutter / Garment Technologist
  • Fashion Marketing or Trend Researcher
  • Costume Designer (film, theatre, TV)
  • Independent Designer or Entrepreneur
