SQA Advanced Diploma in Business
SQA Advanced Diplomas are made up of 240 SCQF credit points, at SCQF level 8, and usually take two years to complete
In the first year of study, students develop a strong foundation in the core principles of business and management. They are introduced to essential concepts in accounting, economics, marketing, human resource management, and organisational behaviour, gaining an understanding of how businesses operate within local and global contexts.
Students explore business accounting and financial fundamentals, learning how organisations record, interpret, and use financial information. Core economic principles are examined through both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives, enabling students to understand market behaviour, economic decision-making, and the wider business environment.
Communication and professional development play a central role in Year 1. Students develop effective business communication skills, customer-focused approaches, and personal development strategies that support employability and workplace readiness. The programme also introduces business law, ensuring students understand the legal framework within which organisations operate.
Digital literacy is embedded throughout the year, with students gaining practical skills in business IT applications and spreadsheet use, supporting data handling, analysis, and decision-making. Management-focused modules introduce students to leadership, teamwork, and organisational structures, helping them understand how people and processes interact within business settings.
The year culminates in a Graded Unit, allowing students to integrate their learning through assessment that reflects real-world business scenarios.
In the second year, students build on their foundational knowledge and move towards a more strategic, analytical, and international perspective of business. The focus shifts to developing higher-level cognitive, behavioural, and professional skills required for effective business practice in complex and competitive environments.
Students examine business culture and strategy, exploring how organisations develop competitive advantage and respond to internal and external change. International and global perspectives are strengthened through the study of world economics and international marketing, enabling students to understand global markets, cross-cultural communication, and international business operations.
Financial and analytical skills are further enhanced through modules in financial forecasting, statistics for business, and business contracts, equipping students with the ability to evaluate data, plan resources, and support strategic decision-making.
Professional and interpersonal development remains a key theme. Students develop presentation skills, behavioural competencies, and workforce development strategies, ensuring they can communicate effectively, adapt to organisational change, and contribute positively to team and organisational performance.
Information and communication technologies are explored in greater depth, focusing on their role in modern business operations and decision-making. The programme concludes with Business: Graded Unit 2, a substantial integrative assessment that demonstrates students’ ability to apply knowledge, skills, and understanding in a business-related context.
